Wine excellence starts in the vineyards, in the fertile soil of the Great Southern region.
Our Great Southern Estate Vineyard portfolio is now comprised of three unique properties. The Ferngrove Home Block, Vintage Park and Ferndale. Using only 100% Estate grown fruit, each site produces grapes with equally distinctive flavours due to variations in soils, microclimate, exposure and other viticultural factors.
The Ferngrove Home Block was the first estate planted by Ferngrove and is our home vineyard situated next to the winery. The site is ideally suited to grow Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot and Shiraz;. The grapes from this site are the backbone of our Orchid and Black Label program.
Vintage Park (1999) is a 39-hectare parcel planted to Shiraz, Merlot, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. Located closer to Wingebellup Road, the site is composed of gravelly, sandy loam soils. Water drains rapidly in the lean soil, causing the vines to work harder, thereby bringing about the fruit intensity and structure that make the wines from this area so unique. The vineyard is often the first we harvest and brings us an indication of the quality of the vintage to come.
Ferndale Vineyard (2005) is located to the north of the Ferngrove winery. The unique rocky alluvial soils creates excellent growing conditions for the vines. The 50-hectare site is planted to 100% reds including Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. The wines from this vineyard exhibit abundant dark red fruit characteristics of black raspberry and hints of strawberry.
